The wind did not deter people away from the grand finale for the year with a very respectable turnout of 23. There were decisive wins in both the Long and Short Course with the winners in each section coming home with minutes to spare in front of the second place getters.

The Short Course winner, Tane Duncan, proved unstoppable in the swim and continued his winning form into the run, even completing the run without shoes.
Other notable performances were given from Brendan Booth, the only junior male to compete in the long course, Nathaniel Vaandering who came from being a few minutes back in the swim to gain 3rd place overall in the Long Course after a flying run. Also Leigh Cooper completed all the races in the series and showed some serious improvement from week to week; two more consistent competitors were Trudie Carter and Shane Gibson, Trudie completing a hard swim well and Shane running extremely well also.

With this being the final race the draw for the Blue Seventy Wetsuits were made, the first wetsuit the winner needed to be present to win and the second wetsuit could be won by anyone. After drawing a few names that were not present, the first wetsuit went to a very deserving competitor, David Strang. The second wetsuit went to a competitor who was not present and we are currently contacting him to inform him of his win.

Thanks to all those people who joined in and gave the series a go, you guys made it all worth organising. the sun was out, not a cloud in the sky and barely a ripple on the water! The field was down a bit after last week’s record turnout but the racing was just as fierce!

Beginning the Long Course and the Short Course swim legs together at Eely point the competitors swam left to right watching from the transition area set up on the shore side at Bremner Bay.

Having to head substantially offshore to find some deep water the long course competitors were the first to emerge from the water with travelling Ironman athlete Nathanial Vaandering (Canada) emerging just ahead of Fi Fairbairn (Wanaka) and Fraser Hill (Waikato).

These three competitors were only 20sec apart and were a sign of the racing to come as they headed out onto the 4km run course. Emerging not far behind them and chasing hard were Leigh Cooper and Chris Booth both from Wanaka also.

The Short course proved to be another successful day for young Erin Hurley after competing in her first ever race in the Blue Seventy Swim Run series last week she managed to take control after the swim and cruised to victory in just under 19mins for the 300m swim and 2km run.

The Waikato proved to be producing hardy young competitors where Callum Hill at only 9yrs of age competing in the short course ended up swimming the long course swim and then if that wasn’t enough he ran the entire 2km run along the gravel track in bare feet, Finishing in 2nd in the Short course in 21.33!

In the long course there was some hard running going on where the men’s field was seeing the front 3 competitors close the gap to first, Vaandering finished 30sec clear in a time of 22.58sec not far ahead of a hard chasing Fraser Hill in and Chris Booth in 23.27sec and 23.48sec respectively.

The Female field was equally exciting with a sprint finish between Fi Fairbairn and Fiona Cooper (Wanaka), exiting the water almost one minute in arrears Cooper chased hard on the run catching Fairbairn in the finishing straight but didn’t have quite enough to edge out Fairbairn who had just enough to take the women’s win in 26.18sec and her 4th Straight win of the Series! Cooper finishing in 26.22sec and claiming another second after placing 2nd last week, Jackie Boyd who seems to like the Bremner Bay course took home 3rd spot in 33.30sec.

Notable performances were from Chris booth with a strong run to claim 3rd place in the open men’s field, Leigh Cooper with a strong run leg, Callum Hill for his extra effort in the swim and taking on the gravel track in bare feet and Dave Strang for completing his 4th Blue Seventy Swim Run Series race of the series and looking fresh at 66 years of age crossing the finish line!

The Blue Seventy Swim Run Series takes a break next week and comes together on the Wednesday the 20th of Feb for the fifth and final race of the 2008 series to be held at the Meadowstone end of Roy’s Bay (The main Wanaka shore front) by the green bridge at the entrance to the Water fall creek walking track.

Race 5 sees the long course competing over a 1000m swim and a 5km run and the Short Course over a 500m Swim and a 2.5km run. It’s the last race in what has been a wonderful series over the start to 2008 – if you haven’t done any of the races yet get out there there’s only one left!!

More details www.swimrunwanaka.blogspot.com

End

Steve Gould & Nicky Samuels
Race Directors
Blue Seventy Swim Run Series 2008
Steve.gould@shpg.co.nz
0212282644

Race 4 Details

Blue Seventy Swim Run Series Race 4

Location - Bremner Bay
Date: Tuesday 5th February (Not Wed because of Waitangi day)
Registration - 5.15 - 5.45pm
Race Briefing - 5.45pm Race Start - 6pm
Entry Fee $10pp
SC - 375m Swim, 2km Run
LC - 750m Swim, 4km Run

Swim Run Series Race 3 - Media Release

Blue Seventy Swim Run Series race #3
Media release
29.01.08

Race three proved to be the biggest turnout in the Blue Seventy Swim Run series to date! With over 50 people turning out to compete in the lake swim and shore side race format event. An exciting field of locals turned out with their numbers bolstered by the John Newsom (NZ Multisport coach) led EPIC camp, training in Wanaka for two days before heading to Queenstown then off back to Christchurch.
The sizeable field and the slightly windy conditions lended itself to a challenging swim, looking more like a 400m loop of the swim competitors in the long course headed out for the first of their two laps, the short course however stuck close to shore in the rougher conditions completing a 300m straight line swim back to the transition area.
Leading early in the swim were EPIC camp leaders John Newsom and Gordo Bryn showing their pupils how things are done in the rough conditions and getting about a 50m gap over the rest of the field. The short course race proved to be the unveiling of a new star in the Swim Run Series with young Wanaka local Erin Hurley stepping up to take on the boys. Leading out of the water and showing that she is a great swimmer Hurley had a minute lead back to locals Robert Lee and Finn Fairbairn into transition. Lee and Fairbairn chased hard on the 2km run but didn’t have enough to catch Hurley finishing 12 and 30 seconds behind respectively.
The long course competitors were just beginning to emerge from the tough swim in the choppy water emerging first out of the water were John Newsom, Scott Molina and Albert Boyce who were all participants in the EPIC camp and had rode their bikes from Tekapo earlier that day! These three were just under 1min ahead of Gordo Bryn and the first of the locals and possibly his first of Swim Run Race of 2008 Mark Cockroft. A hard running and past winner local John Mezger stormed up the field to finish in 5th position overall and record one of the fastest run splits of the day.
The 4km run for the long course didn’t change the order of the EPIC camp participants after transition with Newsom taking out the race in a smart 34.58sec, just over 20 seconds ahead of Molina who also held his advantage over Boyce rounding out an EPIC camp clean sweep of the 3rd race of the Swim Run Series.
Miss consistant Fi Faribairn continued her fine run of form finishing first in the female long course only 9mins behind the overall winner Newsom in 42.49sec. Phillipa Findlay completed her 3rd race of the series to finish 2nd overall in 45.50sec and just a head of Leanne Kent in 51.43 finishing 3rd.
The tough conditions will have the competitors looking forward to next week in Bremner Bay where the swells are a little shallower but the racing just as hot!
Thanks to Blue Seventy – if you need an awesome wetsuit be sure you get into one of these! We’ll see you all next week for race 4 – Bremner Bay – same time Tuesday 5th Feb.
End
Steve Gould & Nicky Samuels
Race Directors
Blue Seventy Swim Run Series 2008
021 2282644
www.swimrunwanaka.blogspot.com
www.blueseventy.com

Blue Seventy Swim Run Series Race #4

Race 4 - Bremner Bay
Date: Tuesday 5th February Earlier wind had put a small chop on the water, but as 6pm rolled around there was not a breath of wind and temperatures quickly moved into the mid twenties in the picture perfect Bremner Bay.
The Short Course competitors were first to emerge from a slightly warmer swim leg than last week, due to the shallow waters of Bremner bay which also allowed for a few ‘dolphin dive’ tactics along some of the shallower stretches. Hitting the beach first was Brendon Booth for the second week in a row – showing he is one to watch through the series! He was followed by the ever energetic Finn Fairbairn who always chases hard on the run leg, just ahead of a charging lead in the Long Course Field.
In his first of the Swim Run races local DOC worker Gavin Mason had a tough time of it in the water duelling with last week’s winner and Xterra athlete John Mezger opening up a sizeable gap over the rest of the field over the 500m swim. With these two through transition and out onto the picturesque run course around Bremner Bay’s water edge walking track, it was now time to turn to the rest of the field following in their wake.
Coming in thick and fast we saw Sarah Tweedie and George Fisher amongst this group exiting the water only one second apart 3rd and 4th respectively in the short course race. Last year’s open women’s champ Fi Fairbairn also emerged amongst this group in 3rd place over all with local vet men’s 1 and 2 Gary Tweedie and John Fisher.
With most of the field out onto the run we saw the first of the short course competitors coming home after their 1.5km run around the Bremner Bay waters edge track. Leading the field home for the second week in a row was Brendon Booth, crossing the line in a very quick 14.31sec, followed home by the fit young Finn Fiarbairn in 15.37sec and Sarah Tweedie managed to hold off George Fisher to take 3rd place in 18.17sec, a mere 3sec ahead of Fisher.
The long course was one way traffic after hitting the run, Mason managed to put a 50sec gap over Mezger in the first lap of the run and extending his lead over the second lap to finish in 18.59sec, with Mezger crossed the line a minute and a half later in 20.30sec. A hard charging Chris Booth came through the field in his preferred leg to claim 3rd place in 24.03sec.
Fi Fairbairn claimed the women’s long course again this week clearing out to beat Leigh Carter by 10sec in 25.24, Carter crossing the line in 25.36sec showing her fitness is improving as the series progresses. Wanaka’s own Marjorie Cook came across the line in 3rd position with a stellar effort on the day completing the course in 36.15sec.
Another wonderful race with the competitors enjoying every minute of the race, in picture perfect conditions and at a wonderful - Bremner Bay and of course Wanaka. Great to see all those people getting out there and having a go! This week we saw Triathlon New Zealand Representatives James and Anna Elvery’s father out there racing – we hope to see them here racing next week!
Don’t forget, race number 3 is at the Wanaka Lake front (diagonally across from the Speight’s Ale House) 5.15 – 5.45pm registration, 5.50pm briefing, 6pm race start - $10pp. Distances for race 3 are:
SC – 300m Swim, 2km Run and LC - 600m Swim, 4km Run
Dont forget to check out www.swimrunwanaka.blogspot.com for more information, full results and race photos!

End

Steve Gould & Nicky Samuels
Race Directors
Blue Seventy Swim Run Series – Wanaka 2008

Blue Seventy Swim Run Series 2008

Race #2 Details

Bremner Bay A generous first turn out of just under twenty competitors were the first to embark on what turned out to be an exiting course for both athletes and competitors.

The first race of the series was based around the swim exit race for the upcoming challenge Wanaka race the following weekend. Over half the field were involved in the challenge race and this was a good opportunity to get a good feel for the water, the transition area and swimming in the lake.

Beginning with a 400m swim for the long course and a 200m for the short, it was a fast and furious pace with some top swimmers out there competing. The short course competitors would emerge from the water first as the navigation seemed to be easier from their starting bouy giving them a straight line swim. The Long Course competitors after zig-zagging initially ended up only a minute down on the Short Course competitors into transition.

The transition turned out to be an action packed venue where both short and long course competitors quickly got their running shoes on and headed out onto either their 1.5km or 3km beach run.

The run was exciting as Chris Booth, Fi Fairbairn, Ben More and John Mezger all exited transition in close succession. Chris running the short course was about a minute ahead of Finn Fairbairn and Rose Gould who were second and third respectively in the short course race.
It was John Mezger, current NZ Xterra team (Off road Triathlon) who established himself early on in the run taking the lead within the first 750m and never looked back, building time on each lap he kept consistant and looked comfortable on both laps of the run.

Ben More showed a bit of resistance finishing only 20sec behind Mezger and finishing the run strongly. Fi Fairbairn finished in 3rd place 50sec behind the winner Mezger.

All the competitors were from the local area and showed a lot of promise as multisport athletes, the series is targeted at giving people an opportunity to ‘have a go’ in a less competitive environment with a fun atmosphere. We want to see as many people just out there enjoying it!

The series is based to build endurance by adding small distance to each race over the 5 race series. Swim-run Wanaka moves to Bremner Bay next Wednesday for race 2

End

Steve Gould
Race director
Wanaka Swim-Run Series 2008
021 2282644
www.swimrunwanaka.blogspot.com

Results

Long Course
1.
